pruning oleander

What is the best way to prune oleander in SE Texas, Houston area? I have one that is growing out of control and need to trim it back.

Hi gholman,

The general rule of pruning is to cut back only up to one-third of the plant's overall size. Remove all dead and damaged limbs and continue pruning for balance and shape.

Shrubs and trees that bloom are best pruned after they have finished blooming, but pruning can take place at any time during the year. If blooms have already set for the season, some blooms will be lost, but this will not affect the health of the tree.

If your oleander is pale green, feed it in the spring with a slow release shrub fertilizer. Repeat in the fall if the leaf color is still faded.
