Welcome to our community Julie!

The easiest way for you to paint your cabinets is to prime them first with an oil based primer. The reason I say oil based is because, more than likely, the stain is oil based. Therefore, you need a primer that will stick to it, which would be oil based. If you did the work yourself, and you know it is latex (water) based, you can use a water based primer.

After your primer has dried, you can paint on top of it with either an oil or latex based paint. Most people use either a semi-gloss or high gloss finish, but I have heard of people using satin as well. It's up to you on how shiny you would like it to be. :smileyhappy:

For the big, broad areas, you will want to use a roller with a short nap, I usually recommend 1/4". This will leave a nice, smooth finish. Cut in with a high quality, angled brush for areas that the roller won't reach.

I hope this helps you with your project! Please let us know if we can help with anything else.
