repairing mailbox

We have a metal mailbox and one side of the mailbox door is hanging down which means the postal worker does not take her time to close the door when she is finished putting the mail in the box.  How can I install a new rivet on the mailbox door?  The mailbox is enclose in brick.

Hello fir8970.  Welcome to the Community!

It sounds like access to the rivet hinge is a problem due to the brick work.  In addition, this hinge uses a much larger head rivet than you will commonly find available.  What I would consider is using a short machine screw just smaller than the original hinge hole, with fender washers flanking the mailbox both inside and out.  If you use either a plastic lock nut or a pair of nuts jammed together, you can allow the screw to act as a hinge while leaving a little slack by not fully tightening down against the mailbox metal.  Jam the nuts against each other before they clamp down on the door and side wall.  Beyond that idea, pictures would help to see if any other alternatives might work better.

Is this what you are looking for?

Chris.
