replace a kitchen hanging light

I would like to change out my hanging kitchen light with a kitchen hanging light/chandelier.  Do I need to turn off the power from the breaker before doing so? I have never done this before and as a senior citizen female I wonder if I can do it.

Hi Novicesenior,

Yes, by all means you must have the breaker turned off for safety reasons.

To assure the power is off, leave the light on, have another person stand in the room and verify the power is off when you switch off the breaker.

Once the power is off remove any glass globe or cover and the bulbs, then loosen the screws holding the fixture in place.

Next pull the fixture away from the wall far enough to see the wires, the white is neutral and goes to the white wire on the fixture.

The black wire is the power or hot wire and attaches to the black wire on the fixture,

Disconnect the wires and the ground wire and remove the old fixture.

New reverse the process with the new fixture, be sure to attach the ground wire to the electrical box before you install the new fixture.

When you’re done, turn the power back on and enjoy your new light fixture.
