Hello janjenn.  Welcome to the Community!

A ceiling fan, like any load, needs both a power wire and a neutral wire to complete the circuit.  Without these your old ceiling fan could not have worked.  Since you do not have a white colored neutral wire, it becomes difficult to say what wires do what without tracing them.  I recommend that you contact an electrician to sort this out.

You are right.  The old fan would not have worked.  There is a white wire with the new fan but I did not notice one when I removed the old fan but I will recheck.
