setting tile on painted Lanai cement floor

We had left over outdoor masonry paint last year and painted our outdoor Lanai floor.  We have now decided to lay outdoor ceramic tile over the concrete slab.  Do we have to remove the paint or can we just rought it up?  If we must remove what is the best non-chemical way to do it?

Good morning DIYnana,

Thank you for your question and welcome to the community!

Unfortunately, you will indeed need to remove the paint in order for the thin-set mortar to adhere properly to the cement floor.

To do this, you can use several options. The first one is to use a floor maintainer with a concrete coating remover disc (both shown below).

Floor Maintainer

Coating Removal Disc 7

These are both available at your local Home Depot that has a Tool Rental Center. This should get up almost all of the paint. You can contact your nearest store for pricing and availability.

For any remaining/stubborn areas, you can use a safer to use stripping gel. While this is indeed a chemical, it is safe to use indoors and works very effectively to remove paint/solvents without the harsh vapors.

Let us know if you have any additional questions regarding removing the paint, or your tile installation in general.
