Hello karenk and welcome to the community!

Woodworking is one of my favorite hobbies,  I have used both woods before with good results and with little difficulty. One great feature of walnut is that there is no need to add stain, just a clear coat of poly, The grain pattern of walnut is beautiful, like ripples in water. On the other hand, the mahogany grain is subtle and consistent. Both are good choices and both are equally easy to work with for your project, and will give you that WOW effect when you walk in the room.

Walnut on the left and mahogany on the right.
