water filter micron rating

Is the water filter micron rating directly related to the size of opening in the filter media, i.e. 5 micron rating equals 5 micron openings in media?

Hey f1a2r3m4.

The media size of the filter is a direct rating of the filters micron rating. A filter with a 5 micron rating will remove anything 5 microns or larger.

If you are on county water then there is really no fear of bacteria in your water, as it is treated with Chlorine and other chemicals for bacteria and a 5 micron filter would work great for that. If you are on a well I might recommend a 1 micron filter, as this will remove over 99% of bacteria.
