You will want to install something that is fire resistant (insulating) and high heat tolerant (no combustible).

The NFPA has some recommendations for clearances that represent most building codes:

  • Combustible materials should be at least 36 inches from the wood stove.
  • Stove pipe should not be closer than 18 inches from a ceiling.
  • Materials that displace heat are stone, brick, cement wall board, ceramic tile, and sheet metal to name a few.
  • Always provide a 1inch gap between the wall and the material (using spacers) behind the stove so air can circulate between.
  • Heat shields are also very effective.

*If wall materials are allowed to heat up and dry out - over time they could be combustible and become very dangerous. Please consult local building codes and possible consultation with local fire chief for the best solution.
