Hi mam8r,

Zoysia is a great grass that grows well in the Atlanta area. All warm season grasses require a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight to thrive here. When they receive less light, they become sparse and weeds that tolerate the shade will invade the area.

Partial shade will support fescue grass. Fescue will remain green in the winter and requires overseeding in the fall. Mixing fescue and zoysia is usually a bad idea, since they grow so differently. If the front yard is sunny and the back yard is less sunny, Zoysia in front and fescue in the back would be a reasonable solution.

Zoysia lawns are best planted in the spring, while fescue needs to be planted in the fall. Sod your Zoysia this spring and where it is too shady, consider fescue in the fall or much the area and maintain the shadier areas as mulch beds or pine islands.

Keep us posted,
