Hey gnyoung.

It would depend on the structure that you are building and the load that it will be supporting. For example, often 2x6's are used as floor joists in sheds that are 8 ft by 10 ft. There is the factor of 12 inch on center for more support or 16 inch on center for less. For longer spans you might want to move up to 2x10's. You might consider using 2- 2x10's screwed together for heavy loads and longer spans.

Engineers factor in the size of beams, based on load bearing or non load bearing factored in with span lengths. When I am not building off of a blueprint, I air on the side of caution and go with too much support over too little.

I am no engineer nor am I qualified to give structural building advice but I would say that there are too many factors to determine this without knowing the project that you are working on.

What are you building?
