Hi Cindy,

Thank you for your question and welcome to or community.

Cutting cement board or backer board can be a messy task if you use any type of a motorized saw or cutting blade.  To reduce this type of dust greatly, use a carbide tip cutting tool, similar to that used to cut drywall.

Just measure and score the Backer Board just like you would the drywall.  Tthe carbide tipped knife will not dull quickly and is designed to be used on this type of cement board.

Simply measure the piece you need to cut and then draw the line you want to cut and then draw the line you want to cut using a straight edge.  Then use the carbide tipped knife to score the line a couple of times.  Turn the piece over and apply pressure along the scored line on the opposite side of the board.  The Backer Board should snap right along the line where you scored it!

The best part is that there is no dust!!!

Please let us know if you have any futher questions.

Hi Cindy,

It depends on what kind of cut you are trying make. As Rick correctly explained, using a carbide tip cutting tool is great for scoring and cutting cement paneling. If you need to cut a circular or square hole, depending on the size of the hole, you will need different tools. If you can provide more detail about the type of project you're working on, I'd be happy to recommend the best tool for you!
