will blow in insulation work for sound barrier between floors

Here's a question about insulation that comes to us via the Apron blog.

Bill asks:

"will blow in insulation work for sound barrier between floors in 2 story home? could you describe the process you would use to install insulation if you would even use insulation over another process. the noise travels from down stairs."

What's the word for Bill? Would blow insulation between floors have an effect on sound traveling between floors?

Hi Bill,

Blown in insulation will have a minimal effect on sound as it is not dense enough to stop sound waves.

The best solution is to install carpet on the second floor with a heavy jute padding. This will be the best sound insulation.

The real problem is the stairs, a wide open space such as stairs allows sounds to travel from one level to the other.

Placing a door in the stairway and closing off the lower level will go a long way towards the quite you desire.
