We purchased our house and knew our lawn was nothing but weeds, but didn't think it would be this difficult to get rid of them. I have considered tilling the entire lawn and laying sod but I'm not sure what the best method is to get a green lawn in a short period of time. I don't want to wait years before I can have an actual lawn Help please!!!!

Easy and cheap way to win back your lawn from weeds. First go to the tool rental and rent a power seeder. Second, pick up a bale of straw. Third, power seed your lawn, don't worry about the weeds right now. Forth, open the bale of straw and break it applying all over your lawn. Fifth, buy Scotts starter fertilizer and apply with a drop spreader. Sixth, water your lawn early every morning just as the sun comes up so that your lawn has time to dry not allow fungus to take over. Make sure when you water, you water enough to reach down 2 inches into the soil. Allow your new grass to grown at least 4 inches high before cutting and when you cut the lawn, make sure your blades are sharp. Dull blades will rip the new grass out of the ground and cutting below 3 inches will do the same. After 8 weeks, fertilize with Scotts Turf builder with halts.
In the fall, you want to aetrate your lawn, spread Scotts winterizer fert down, power lime, and next spring your lawn will be the best on your block.

What is the purpose of the straw and why do you put the starter fertilizer on top of it? Just curious because I plan only following your suggestion. Thanks.
