Raised Garden Bed

Who doesn’t love fresh vegetables? A raised garden is a fantastic way to setup a small area for gardening. The first step is to select which vegetables and herbs you’d like to grow.

While we’d all love to only pick our favorites it’s important to remember that some plants do better in some climates than others.  Having a chat with any of our certified nursery consultants or resident garden experts on the how-to community will get you set up in no time.

Raised garden beds come in a number of sizes and are very easy to put together. All you really need is a bit of space and fairly level patch of ground. Since the garden sits on the ground you won’t have to worry about turning up soil if you’ve got a compacted lawn. Set up your frame, add some weed block liner (if you choose), then soil, and it’s as simple as that.

Once the soil is in you can begin your planting. We’ve got a video below showing you guys just how easy it is to get started.

As I said in the video your two big concerns for your garden are watering and fertilizing. If you have weather like we do here you can go stretches at a time with the heat.  Regular watering is critical in these situations. Fertilizing is a big one that many people forget and can make a world of difference in your garden. So be sure to check out our selection of organic fertilizers in store and ask our garden experts any questions you may have. If building a raised bed on your own is more your thing be sure to check out this write up over on our Garden Club.

Building a Raised Garden Bed

So as you can see with just a bit of space and some effort you can have fresh herbs and vegetables at your finger tips. I hope this is helpful and happy gardening.

Cheers,

ChrisFixit

Hi there sarahsedg,

I'm Grow2gril, from The Home Depot and welcome to the Community!  Yes, people are growing vegetables in just about any place they can find today.  As long as you have a full day of sun 6-8+ hours you can build your raised bed on concrete.  You may want to line the bottom with weed block to help contain the soil from washing away.  Keep in mind the ground may heat up on real hot days and so keep water often when hot.

Here is a link on how to grow your own vegetables:

Here is another link on how vegetables are grown at the farm.:

Re: Raised Garden Bed

How long will the wooden sides stand up to the weather and damp soil?

Re: Raised Garden Bed

Chris,  That grass under the garden soil you tossed in will be up and thriving in a couple of weeks.  It's always a good idea to dig out as much of the grass and weeds as you can before adding the new soil.  Also, you can put down some "weed stop" mesh cloth, or even just plain old newspaper (black & white, not the color print), to hinder the growth of whatever was below.

Re: Raised Garden Bed

I would check with a "Martha Stewart" website...I'll just bet She did it alreay! She once had in her magazine a blue print for a flower garden that bloomed from March to November.....Amazing!In addition there are many companies selling the "kits" for raised gardens, if you did a little research I bet one of those companies has a bluepring online.
Plant wisely....less is more.....last year panted too many and they all suffered.....lesson learned!

Re: Raised Garden Bed

Hello Harriet,

I'm Grow2girl from The Home Depot and welcome to the community.  The raised bed shown is made out of cedar which lasts for several years.  The cedar window boxes I purchased over 20 years ago are still in good condition.

I would be worried about your vegetables in wet damp soil because they may be susceptible to root rot.  Also, be sure to place your raised bed in a location that gets full sun at least 6-8+ hours per day.

Happy planting!
