Fan light will not turn off with remote

I purchased a home that has remotes for every ceiling fan in the house (4) except one. The fans look new as do the remotes. The fan I want to put the remote on is identical to the fan in my bedroom so I know it can use a remote. I have spent three trips to HD for different remotes and receivers, they all work the fan but none will turn OFF the light. It stays on no matter what I do or which button I push. It only goes off when I push the wall switch to turn off the fan and light. I have checked the wiring to the fan, since I have had to rewired it three times. I am at a a total loss as to why this is happening. The is no way to turn off the light except by wall switch which also would control the fan. Any thoughts?

Re: Fan light will not turn off with remote

Hi thanks for your question.  I think the receiver was wired wrong by-passing the light funtion.  The  bad news is the fan canopy must be dropped to access the receiver.  Make sure the blue wire from the receiver is wired to the blue(or black with white stripe if a hunter) from the fan.  One of the wires from the ceiling should be capped off usually the red one.   I hope this helps.   David

Re: Fan light will not turn off with remote

There are two wires from the wall switch, a white one and a black one. The black wire and wire wire are attached at the ceiling to the black and white wires from the receiver. There is no red wire at the ceiling. The blue wire for the light is attached to the blue wire from the receiver. Any other thoughts?

Re: Fan light will not turn off with remote

LoneCount,

The best thing you can do is get the model/SKU/UPC/brand name information off the top of the fan motor. If you can locate a sticker that looks like the one I've attached to this post, please email me directly at Nicki_Care@homedepot.com so I can try to locate the tech support department for the fan. They'll give advice & will be able to sell you the exact remote that was made for that fan. Some older fans will not work with Universal remotes sold in the store, or fans that have reverse options will not work with Universal remotes as well.

It's always a good idea to try and purchase the one that was made specifically for your fan.

If you can't find that sticker, please send a picture of the entire fan if it is a Hampton Bay model, & I'll try to ID it that way.

Thanks!

Re: Fan light will not turn off with remote

On a hunch I disconnected the blue (light) wire from the remote leaving all the other wires intact. The light was still when I flipped the wall switch even with the blue wire at the top of the fan housing not being attached to anything. I think the fan may be wired wrong.

Re: Fan light will not turn off with remote

Good job lonecount,  Drop the light kit and see if the blue wire is attached to the black from the light.  If not make the correction.   Let us know.  Stukas
