Hey everybody! GoToGregg here from The Home Depot online community!!
Here is a great project you can do to help our environment!
IT'S COMPOST TIME!
Building a compost bin is a fun and easy project! First you have to determine the location and the size of the bin. I am going to make mine 4’ square and 4’ tall. Keep in mind that you can make it smaller using the same building technique that I am about to explain.
The material you will to build a 4’x4’ compost bin are:
Qty. 2 - 4x4-8’ cedar posts
Qty. 2 - cedar 2x4-8”
Qty. 17- 8’ cedar decking boards or 1x6’s
First cut 7 of the decking boards in half and cut both of the 4x4 post in half. Using a circular saw will work best. The 4x4’s will have to be cut on each side to fully get through the post. Check with your local Home Depot to see if they can be cut for you. Most locations are able to make these cuts.
Connect two of the 4’- 4x4 posts with the 4’ cedar decking boards. Mine is 4 feet tall so I will use seven 4' long decking boards per side and leave an even gap between each board. The sides should look like this.
After making two separate sides like this you will connect them together. Cut 7 more decking boards down to 46” long so will have a total of 14 pieces that are 46" long. I am making these two sides a little shorter so I can fit the cover over the bin. Then attach the 46” pieces to the already completed sides. The finished product should look like this.
Now all that is left is making the bin cover. Measure the distance between the 4x4 posts on the 46” sides. Cut two pieces ¼” smaller than that size out of a cedar 2x4. Now measure the distance between the inside of the decking boards along the 48” side. Cut two pieces 3 ¼” smaller than that measurement. The shorter 2x4’s are going to be the top and bottom of the frame. The longer pieces will fit in between them so they need to be 3” smaller because each 2x4 is actually an 1 ½” thick. Then add a ¼” for play. Once the frame is built test it to make sure it fits inside of the bin. Then you will cut the remaining 3 cedar decking boards in half (4’) and lay them across the frame across shorter side and screw them in with the decking screws. The finished product should look like this.
Now you are ready to go! If anyone has built their own compost bin already please share pictures and ideas!!!!!
Have fun! -Gregg
