What is the best way to get rid of this weed? I'm new to all this, so I don't even know what the name is My mother-in-law told me it's best to pull it out, root and all, but my back yard is covered with them. So what is the best way to get rid of them and keep them from coming back?

Hi again new-Homeowner.
Ricks Picks here. Yes, Mother was right. Pulling the weeds out is the best way to resolve the situation. If you were to use a non-selective herbicide to kill the weeds, you will still have to pull them out before you plant new grass. The disadvantage in spraying first is that there will still be weed seeds in the ground unless you use a herbicide with a pre-emergence such as Round Up Extended Control or the new Bayer DuraZone product.
Wait about one week once you have killed the weeds then remove them. I prefer to take the weeds out while they are still green because they are easier to grasp and will not break apart as easily. However you choose to proceed, your next step will be to re-sod or re-seed the yard. If you have used the pre-emergence type of a weed and grass killer, then you will not be able to re-seed for about 4-6 months, depending on which product you used. If you choose to re-sod then you can do so in about three days after application of the Extended control weed and grass killer or wait 3 days after use of the regular non-selective weed & grass killer.
The types of weeds you have in your picture look to be:
Goose Grass (also know as silver crab grass)
You may have other weedy type grasses there also, but this will give you an idea. I prefer pulling the weeds out using a tilling fork and a dandelion type weed puller.
The tilling fork will help to turn the soil over and get to the deeper roots of the larger, harder to remove weeds. The Dandelion puller helps to get to some of the smaller weeds in harder to reach places.
This should get you started on your weekend project! Be sure to take some before and after pictrues of your lawn project and share them with the rest of the community.
