Welcome to our community Sandman!
My name is Christine and I'm a Home Depot associate in Atlanta.
Before you apply anything to your fence, you need to make sure that the wood is dry enough. Designing_Woman did a post explaining how to determine if your wood is dry enough to paint or stain. Click here for the post.
Once it is dry, you should prep the surface. Preparation is key to making a paint project last for a long time. Behr has a line of wood prep products that will work very well for you. Behr 2 in 1 Wood Prep no. 63 will prep you wood quite nicely.
After you apply this product it is time to stain or paint. Stain will last longer, so I would recommend using stain as opposed to paint. Behr has both a semi-transparent and solid stain. The solid stain will last longer, but if you would like the wood grain to show, you should use semi-transparent. The Behr Premium stain line will last longer than the original Behr stain line.
That should do it! Let us know if you need anymore help with this project and future projects.
Christine
