I have a green room that I want to paint: 3 walls gray, the other one red. The paint desk was busy, so I just bought a can of Kilz primer. Before I start, do I need to have the primer tinted for the gray walls? I overheard a paint desk pro tell someone in the past to tint the primer for a wall to be painted red. What should I do?

Hello MandM and welcome to the community.
My name is TC and I work for The Home Depot in the paint department in Southern California. Almost every day in the store I am asked the same question. Do I need to tint my primer or not? There is no set answer. You say you are going to paint three walls gray and one wall red. It has been my experience that most times a white primer works fine as a base for gray. The red is another story. In the store when we tint most reds our computer tells us that a tinted primer must be used. This is very true. I have achieved the best results using a gray prime coat. The paint desk at your local Home Depot can easily Tint the primer of your choice.
I hope this has been of some help. Thanks for the question and welcome again to the community.
