A friend suggested that we paint our far living room wall a darker account color. She said that a darker color on the wall opposite the entry would make the wall "receed" (making the room appear bigger). Is she full of it?
Also, my sister's living room gets very little sunlight. She thought that painting the ceiling a brighter color (like a soft yellow) would help.

Welcome to our community JamesGray4080,
My name is Christine and I work at The Home Depot in Atlanta.
Dark colors make a room look smaller, while light colors make a room appear bigger. Many people paint accent colors darker than the rest of the walls, but the goal there is to draw attention to that area and to make the room feel more cozy. If there are high ceilings or giant windows in a room, a darker color will make your space feel inviting.
What color are the walls in your sister's living room? If they are darker than the color she is considering painting her ceiling, it will brighten up the room. However, if the color on the wall is lighter than the ceiling color, it will make the room look smaller. Typically people paint their ceilings white. I have seen people paint the ceiling the same color as the walls, and it looks nice, but it does shrink the room. If your sister doesn't have very much natural light I would recommended white for fear of making it look like a cave.
I hope that helped you out.
