by ‎12-27-2011 05:10 PM - edited ‎12-27-2011 05:13 PM

The holidays are a great time to dress up and put on the finest clothes and jewelry for special events.   Then everything goes back into the closet.  Wouldn't it be lovely to upgrade your home to “special occasion” everyday? Then consider changing out your cabinet and furniture jewelry for an updated – and stylish – new year!

  • Design Note #1:
Consider changing out hardware when painting or staining a piece of furniture – or if it is being repurposed in a different room.

There are literally thousands of styles of pulls and knobs (not mention hinges) that can change the look of your room or a piece of furniture.  In many cases, only a simple screwdriver is needed - no painting or staining or power tools required!

  • Design Note #2:
Consider matching the metallic finish of the hardware to the rest of the room, including ceiling fans, lights, faucets, etc.

The most popular changes will be on your cabinet and furniture hardware with knobs and pulls.  Many styles are available in a variety of metals, designs, and finishes.  There are individual pieces and multi-packs in-stock; special order is available at the store and online.  Be sure to browse the hardware in the kitchen department for unique styles available through our cabinet manufacturers.

  • Design Note #3:
I like to purchase one piece or set of hardware (pull and or knob) and see how I like it on the cabinet or furniture in the room.  See how it responds to the light and ambiance of the room.

Select replacement door knobs and pulls that are the same size as the existing holes in your cabinets for the fastest change.  You may need to drill if the new hole needs to be “larger” than the existing hole.  If the “new” hole is smaller than the “old” hole, you will need to fill the old hole and conceal with touch-up paint or matching wood filler.  Our Replacing Door Pulls Project Guide will show how to change out your hardware.

  • Design Note #4:
Keep the old hardware and screws TOGETHER and label them in a bag or small container.

  • Design Note #5:
Some specialty finishes and hand-painted hardware may require special cleaning techniques for a long and beautiful life!

Please share your hardware decorating and design tips. Pictures are greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance for sharing.  I look forward to hearing from you!
